I am so happy that Frank Baum the writer of The Wizard of Oz stories is still getting movies made out of his books. One hundred years after the 1908 publishing, the world of Oz still has all of its magic. Witches, Wizards, time and space travel writers still try to master it all.
A huge weekend for anyone wearing ruby slippers, and proof that Sam Raimi is more than just the Spider-Man franchise when it comes to box office dollars. Here’s what went down.
A stunning debut for Oz: The Great And Powerful, which brought in $80 million in it’s first three days, overperforming amidst some fairly middling reviews. Chock this up to the fantastic Disney marketing machine, the appeal of a return to Oz that isn’t Return To Oz and having Sam Raimi as the director. Geeks love him for Spider-Man and Evil Dead, and now families will love him for Oz. The film should be able to hold onto the top next weekend as well, and could have $200 million in its sights. Meanwhile, it’s worldwide gross is already $150 million, so this is another big hit for Disney.
